5 Point Scale to be used with Kobi
Superman Scale to keep Kobi's interest
Calming sequence to be used with Kobi
Anxiety Curve Model explained to parents and staff
The primary goal of the scale is to help Kobi recognise and functionally respond to his emotions and behaviour. InThe Brain and Emotional Intelligence: New Insights (2011), Daniel Goleman communicates that the scale of what individuals think and do is restricted to what they fail to recognise.
The 5-point scale will be used to help teach Kobi to identify the varying levels of stress and anxiety he feels. The scale visually breaks down his responses to anxiety by marking each level with what his behaviour looks like, what he feels like at that level, and strategies he can use to reduce his anxiety level(Dunn Buron, 2012).
Kobi will begin to “check in” on a regular basis throughout the day to manage his emotions. When he is experiencing even a little stress, then he can notify staff and relaxation routines can be employed to evade meltdowns.
The scale will be available for referral to Kobi at all times as he will keep a copy in his pocket. Additionally, staff will also keep a copy of the scale on their person at all times. Reinforcement is essential throughout the learning process and all attempts to employ relaxation techniques at appropriate times must be recognised. Kobi will also be praise when he identifies his stress levels.
Kobi will be taught relaxation techniques by way of a calming sequence; a small chain of relaxation strategies communicated in a visual and repetitive way. The calming sequence will involve squeezing hands, rubbing his temples, then legs, and stretching his arms. The scale illustrates “coming down” from anxious to calm, and the sequence is repeated 5 times (see figure 5). Kobi is able to carry out these physical moves himself, so that the sequence does not rely on others. The sequence will be displayed on Kobi’s desk and a pocket chart will be given to him, and additionally staff, for reference whilst in various environments (Dunn Buron, 2006).
To aid in Kobi’s self-management, staff and parent training will be provided, allowing all stakeholders to engage in the strategy with Kobi. To explain the 5-point scale concept the Anxiety Curve Model will be explained to parents and staff, visually illustrating the escalation of anxiety, point of explosion and the de-escalation phase. They will also be provided with pocket-sized copies of the 5 point scale and calming sequence.
